Basements can get flooded for a variety of reasons including poor roof drainage, cracks in the foundation wall, problems in the landscape grading, and a high water table.
What is a Sump Pump?
A sump pump is an automatic drainage pump that can draw water away from flooded areas or sump basins and direct it elsewhere. It’s typically placed on the basement floor and collects ground water from the surrounding soil and releases it into the storm drains or other such areas. Sump pumps will stop basement floods and reduce the amount of humidity and moisture in the basement. You won’t have to deal with a perpetually damp environment.
Different Types of Sump Pumps
There are two distinct types of sump pumps available in the market and both have their pros and cons. You can consult with an expert plumber to determine with one would be right for you before you book a sump pump installation in Ottawa.
- Submersible Pump – A submersible pump has a special motor that’s submerged in oil, which provides better cooling and ensures reliable performance. This system is also sealed so no dirt and debris get inside the pump. Plumbers recommend a submersible pump for residential use because it’s quieter and safer in case you have children and pets.
- Pedestal Pump – This sump pump has a column-mounted motor and it uses a drive shaft-power impeller that pumps water. This is a more affordable option because the design is simple and easy install. The cooling system isn’t as efficient as a submersible pump as the motor is exposed to the air. It attracts dust and moisture easily so it has a shorter lifespan and is prone to problems and failures. It’s not ideal for residential use because it’s loud and easily accessible by children and pets.
If you’re on a tight budget, you pedestal sump pump would be a good option for you but if you have room in your budget, you should install a submersible sump pump. They’re more durable and efficient and will deliver a reliable performance.
